Understanding Romans chapter 6
Rom 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
The understanding: , The power of sin had control over man, to bring about his destruction of soul, in hell. But the grace of God (Grace is the power of God, that he gives us, to accomplish his will) the grace of God transformed our lives into a life of righteousness that is pleasing to God. Our life of righteousness will be rewarded by eternal life in heaven. Because of the salvation plan, that Jesus provided on the cross. It for anyone who comes to Christ, trusting in his merits of salvation!
Now we begin Romans chapter 6.
Insight: Romans 6:1 (chapter 6, verse 1,) is making reference to the closing verses in chapter 5. as recorded above.
Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
The Understanding: how shall we answer then? If Christ has set us free from sin, are we to keep on sinning, because Jesus will keep forgiving us?
Rom 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
The understanding: absolutely not! If we have been delivered from sin by the power of Christ, why are going back to sin again?
Rom 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
The understanding:. Don’t you know, anyone who has entered in the baptism of Christ, entered into the baptism of his death?
Note: Baptism in the bible means to enter into something, or, to be a part of it. So when it says:” were baptized into his death.” Means we entered into the death of Christ. What does that mean to me? He took our place on the cross! It was WE who deserved to die, because of our sins. Gods laws of justice, demanded the death for all who sin! But since Jesus took our place, and died on the cross, it was his death that satisfied the demands of justice, placed on us!
The understanding: It should be understood, it was the physical body of Jesus that died. That physical body represented our sinful body, and sins power that worked in our evil fleshly desires and thoughts. When we entered into the death of Christ, our evil hearts, and desires, were crucified on the cross with Jesus! You cannot separate our sinful hearts and desires from who we are. We are sinful from birth, by our evil nature. So when we begin to see, that death on the cross was our evil, sinful hearts, and minds, then we understand, those evil powers and influences that governed our hearts and lives, were killed on the cross of Christ! we know the blood of Christ, cleanses us from all our sins in the past. But do we understand, our evil, sinful hearts that CAUSED us to sin, were executed on the cross of Jesus! The power of sin to control us, stopped at the cross! Any who come to Christ, asking forgiveness of their sins, will be forgiven! BUT, when he forgives us, he takes those evil desires and thoughts that CAUSED us to sin, and kills them on his cross! THE POWER OF SIN IS BROKEN!
WE ARE FREE FROM OUR OLD NATURE OF SIN THAT INFLUENCED US TO SIN, AND FREE FROM ALL OUR SINS OF THE PAST!
Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
The understanding: When Jesus died, they placed his dead body in a tomb, and closed the stone door.
Our sinful nature went right in there with him! Completely dead, just like the body of Jesus was!
But Christ came back to life again, and was resurrected out of death and the tomb, by the power and spirit of God the father! AND SO CAN WE! Just as Jesus went on to live again by the power of the spirit within him, so can we, continue our lives by the power of the spirit, and live in resurrection power!
Rom 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
The understanding: we went into that tomb with Jesus, when he died, and we came out with him, of the tomb in resurrection power! This is called being filled with the spirit.
Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
The understanding: we can be assured, the evil nature of our hearts, called the old man, and his body of sin, was crucified with Christ, so we would not have to listen to it anymore! We are free to live without sin for the rest of our lives!
body if sin meaning: The carnal mind: Rom 8:7 / Evil thoughts Isa 59:7 / The wicked tongue: Jas 3:6 / The deceitful heart. Gen 6:5, Jer 17:9 / Blood guilty hands: Prov 6:17 / Evil Feet: Isa 59:7 / Eyes full of adultery 2 Pet 2:14 / our evil sinful spirit / and all the dark spiritual powers that controlled them!
Rom 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
The understanding: All who “died” with Christ, are free from sin and its power! Just like a dead man is not influenced by the things of this world, Because he is dead! dead to the world. Dead to sin. Dead to self. Dead to the workings of all sin!
Rom 6:8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
The understanding: If we know we have been freed from sin, by the death of Christ, we can also know, we will be alive in his resurrection power!
Rom 6:9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
The understanding: Christ was raised form the dead, death, and the grave, by the power of the Holy Spirit!
Christ died on the cross once and for all. He will not die again in every generation. Once was enough.
The power for all things to be alive, whether it be plants, animals, man, or even microscopic cells! all life comes from the trinity! Christ came to earth once as a man, that he might die. But now that he is alive again, he has risen up to reign with God the father! Christ will never die again. He will never return to earth as a man again.
He is the source of all life. He can never die again!
Rom 6:10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
The understanding: Yes Christ died. He died on the cross for us. That we may have access to eternal life. But now that he is risen, he returned to heaven and sits at the right hand of god! In full eternal power!
Rom 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The understanding: In so manner, consider your sinful self, to have been crucified with Christ! now you are dead to those sins! But having been born again, and become a new man, your life now is a life of victory over sin, and filled with righteousness and truth! All to the glory of the father, through the merits of Jesus Christ!
Rom 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
The understanding: Don’t go back to the old life of sin, making yourself a slave to sin and its darkness. Giving sin the power over you, because you yielded to its temptations of evil desires, to destroy you forever.
Rom 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
The understanding: Don’t even give yourself over to commit things that may not be sin, but they are not right in the sight of God. If you start doing things that are not right with god, it will become sin, and you will lose everything god and Jesus has done for you!
But rather! Give yourself to living the life of the righteous! In victory over sin! For God has raised you up with the spirit of Jesus in your heart! Now your physical body and your spiritual body, are vessels of honor and righteousness, to the glory of god, your heavenly father!
Rom 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
The understanding: Because the power of sin in your life, was broken and crucified on the cross with Jesus, you are free from sin. You are no longer under the laws of sin and darkness. But you are under the power of the holy ghost!
Rom 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? GOD FORBID.
The understanding: What does this mean? Since we are free from the power of sin, can we go back to sin, and still be free from its controlling influence? Thinking ourselves to be a sinning saint! Freed from the punishments and consequences of sin, while we keep on sinning? ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Rom 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
The understanding: Don’t you know, the scripture says, to whatever spirit you yield to, it will become your master! It is the spirt of sin! such as lust, lying, pride, selfishness, deceit, or any other sins that man can commit! That same spirit that you yielded to, is now the controlling spirit in your life, once again! But this time it will be much worse!
Or you can give yourself as a vessel of honor unto God, and be filled with his righteousness and peace!
Rom 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
The understanding: Praise God the father, Jesus the son, and the holy spirit! For they have transformed your life! You used to live in sin and darkness. Doing things you were ashamed of, and things that was leading you down the road to hell and its torments. BUT you have obeyed the spirit of God, from the heart! And doing so has brought you unto the kingdom of God, to live with Jesus and righteousness in eternal glory with God!
Rom 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
The understanding: You are free from sin, and now live the life of the righteousness!
Rom 6:19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
The understanding: I use these illustrations of being a slave , and being set free. because we as men, clearly understand the application. So now, just as you used to obey the evil desires of an evil heart, even so now, obey the righteous desires of the holy spirit, that will lead you into holiness of heart and life!
Rom 6:20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
The understanding: When you were the servants if sin, there was no righteousness found in you.
Rom 6:21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
The understanding: How did that work out for you! Look how shameful you were! Look how empty you were! And in the end, the only hope you had was to go screaming into hell, when you died! Because of the sinful life you were living!
Rom 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
The understanding: You have been changed! Your free from sin! You have become a child of God! Your life is filled with peace and happiness from God. And in death, you will be swept up, into the very arms of God the father!
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The understanding: The cost of living in sin, is eternal death in hell with the wicked and vile! With all of its torments!
But God the father, gave his son Jesus, to save you from sin, and make you a vessel of honor, in the kingdom of God!
All because of what Jesus did for you!
